Academic Plan: SWOT Analysis

The tentative major I chose was Art, visual communications with a possible concentration of illustration. I have a very creative side and it seemed like a good option to think about. The main worry I have about this particular major is the lack of work.  “Starving artist” comes to mind, but after reading a few articles, I discovered that with enough determination and hard work, anything is possible.  I am approximately 55 percent completed to progress towards this major.  Right now would be the perfect time to choose a major, and that is what I plan to do.
The list of courses that I have taken are as follows in regards to my general education requirements: English 1010 and 2010, History 1700, Philosophy and Ethics 205G, Personal Health and Wellness (In progress this semester), Creative writing  English 2020 for my Humanities requirement,  Interpersonal Communication 2110, Nutrition  2020, Geology 1010, and Elementary Astronomy 1040. I am still lacking Math 1030 and History of Art to the Renaissance 2710, leaving 6 credit hours to completion.  I plan on taking Math 1030 and History of Art to the Renaissance 2710 in the spring 2013 semester.
I still need to take 66 credits of upper division core classes for the Art program. Those include: 2D Design, Graphic Computer Applications, Photography, History of Art to the Renaissance, 3D Design, Senior Seminar, Art and Visual communication lectures, as well as 6 additional credits in Art 1000 level or higher as electives.   I plan on taking 2D design and Photography in the spring semester 2013 as well.  The following semesters I will finish up on my core requirements and electives with Senior Seminar in 2014, along with my art portfolio.
What I like most about this major is that I am right brained and art doesn’t make my head hurt. I have always enjoyed drawing and writing as a child. I also like that art can be done in solitude and not in large groups with peer pressure and social stigma. I am an introverted person who enjoys being creative and loves to express myself artistically. I need to do amore in depth search of the career I choose, which is between Illustration (I have always dreamt of being a writer and being able to illustrate my own material, as well as others) and animation.
I am worried about not being a good enough artist to make it, and about the 3D Graphic Design course because it looks rather difficult. Nonetheless, I will never know if I want to be an artist until I try. Doing a few job shadows (I’m thinking of Disneyland animators and the like) will help me with clarity in my decision. I am also worried that there are other majors out there that I might like better but will be more difficult because I am not left brained and the other majors I am thinking about are Marine Biology and Oceanography, which are VERY scientifically based, and that scares me!
A degree will prepare me for the future in essence that I will have skills and knowledge of art in many forms, much more than I do now.  My knowledge will expand in what fields would be a good option for me, and what I am good at. Having a degree will help me to be appealing to future employers, which is VITAL to having a successful career and getting that first job out of college period. I know that I want to love what I do and make money doing it, so this major is definitely something I need to research more.
