It is quite astonishing how much
ones career and academic plan can change. Mine, for example, has changed more
times than I can count. Over and through loops it has gone, some through fire
and some at monstrous heights and devilish depths. After the progression of
this course, I have gone through such loops to try and figure out what I want
to do with this thing called ‘life’. My eyes have opened to myself and the
world around me immensely.
After the course of this class, I
have gone through the process up and down (and all around) of deciphering the
code of choosing your career and ultimately your life path. In the SEED model,
I did some self-assessments (Myers Briggs, assessing my values, and the like) exploration,
(through the assignments and websites provided, ONET was my personal favorite
tool to use) experience/evaluation (job shadowing/informational interviews),
and deciding (which happened over and over until I found out it wasn’t a good
fit for me and my preferences and natural aptitudes) I am grateful for this
class in the sense that although I still haven’t decided on a career (or
educational path for that matter) I now have the knowledge and tools to help in
my decision. The biggest I plan on using is both ONET and job
shadowing/internships.
The
most helpful things in this course were the assignments that had us look into
jobs and networking, along with job shadowing and internships. I also loved the
Myers Briggs assessment and how alike I was to it. (It even had the exact
things I struggle with!)
What
I plan to do after this course is to decide on what I want to major in by the
end of this month, and have an internship under my belt (which means applying
for them this month) by next June, as well as two job shadows. I want to at
least earn my Bachelor’s degree and in 2 years have started my chosen career
path, with freelance things on the side, such as illustrating and writing.
Within the next year, I plan to improve my GPA and have experience and have
activities such as volunteering under my belt. I need to improve my resume
immensely with both experience and skills and participating in internships and
volunteering should help with that.
I
really enjoyed this class even though looking at everyone else’s experience and
impeccable resumes was quite depressing. I feel like I have no skills compared
to most and that frightens me! I suppose I have to start somewhere, right?
