Have you ever wondered why all of those ‘over achievers’ keep doing internships? Does it boggle your brain because you think that internships are simply a waste of time and only for the people who like pain and suffering? Well wonder no more! In this article I plan to dispel all of your ‘theories’ and hope to change your oh so set mind on the value and importance of internships.
            Ever heard of a thing called a resume? Yes, that’s right! Internships actually GIVE you something alluring to put on your resume…called experience. This not only makes you desirable to your job (and the workplace) but also gives you an advantage of being hired!
            Are you like me and very indecisive? Well if that is the tragic case, then take a gander at the many internships out there offered in your prospective field... you could either find out that dream job you have always been itching for isn’t quite so dreamy... or maybe it is and then some! You never know (and will never make a decision) until you try. How else are you going to know what a job REALLY entails until you experience it first hand?
            Contacts are always nice to have as well, and not just in your phone, either (not all of us are popular, you know). Think about the people you will meet in your prospective field that you could later call upon for both references (think resume here) and a possible job offer! The word I am hinting towards here is networking. This is quite the valuable tool in the job industry.
            Imagine being able to apply what you have learned in the classroom to the real world! (Say, is that even possible?) This is a great way to figure out if you actually learned anything in class and to be able to practice. Better sooner than later I always say.
            Every heard of a thing called confidence? No not the over bearing kind in high school. I’m talking about that sort of confidence when in an interview you can say “Hey! Yes I can do that, and this is when I did it at such and such time.” After all, being able to actually showcase your abilities and prove you can do them is what employers want, right?
            Have I convinced you yet that internships are the cool thing to do? If not, take this last bit of information to heart: you can have an edge in the job market. Yes, that’s right. You can be the candidate that gets picked above anyone else because most employers PREFER or REQUIRE applicants to have done an internship and to have gained experience! So what are you waiting for?! Go find an internship (or three) that will better your future today! (And don’t forget to tell them I sent you!)
